Grade 5 maths: topics, exercises and worksheets

Grade 5 strengthens arithmetic, introduces larger numbers and builds an understanding of fractions. Use this selection to find a suitable topic and review the foundations step by step.

Reference: existing NRW curriculum mapping in Germany. Topics and sequence may vary by federal state, school type and classroom. This selection is not a complete curriculum.

Start with a topic you find difficult. Try a worked example before opening its solution, then compare methods. In the German fractions PDF, questions 1–5 cover foundations; the later calculations prepare for Grade 6.

1. Read numbers and calculate confidently

Place numbers on a number line, practise rounding and use estimates to check written calculations. Factors and multiples will then help you simplify fractions.

2. Understand and compare fractions

Interpret a fraction as a share of equal parts. Then practise simplifying and expanding: its value stays the same when both numerator and denominator change by the same factor.

3. Connect units with geometry

Choose matching units before calculating perimeter, area or volume. Distinguish cm from cm². For coordinates, read the horizontal value first and the vertical value second.

Two questions to get started

Write 4,507,082 in words.

Answer and worked solution

four million five hundred and seven thousand and eighty-two

The groups are 4 million, 507 thousand and 82. Read together that gives four million five hundred and seven thousand and eighty-two.
