Practice Written division
Long division repeatedly divides, multiplies and subtracts to find a quotient and possibly a remainder.
It helps you share quantities and calculate rates.
Exercises with solutions
Work from left to right and check how often the divisor fits into the start of the number. Write that digit after the equals sign and multiply back. Subtract and bring down the next digit.
Exercise 1
Calculate 84 ÷ 4.
Show solution and working
21
8 ÷ 4 = 2, then 4 ÷ 4 = 1. Check: 21 · 4 = 84.
Exercise 2
Calculate 96 ÷ 6.
Show solution and working
16
9 ÷ 6 = 1 remainder 3. Bring down the 6: 36 ÷ 6 = 6. Check: 16 · 6 = 96.
Exercise 3
Calculate 525 ÷ 5.
Show solution and working
105
5 ÷ 5 = 1. The next digit is 2 and 2 ÷ 5 does not work, so you write a 0 in the result. Bring down the 5: 25 ÷ 5 = 5. Check: 105 · 5 = 525.
Exercise 4
Calculate 742 ÷ 6. What is the remainder?
Show solution and working
123 remainder 4
7 ÷ 6 = 1 remainder 1. Bring down 4: 14 ÷ 6 = 2 remainder 2. Bring down 2: 22 ÷ 6 = 3 remainder 4. Check: 123 · 6 + 4 = 742.
Common mistake
Forgetting a 0 in the result where the divisor does not fit. In 525 ÷ 5 the 0 belongs between the 1 and the 5. At the end the remainder must be smaller than the divisor.
