Practice Converting units
Converting units changes the numerical value while preserving the measured quantity.
Length, area and volume use different conversion factors.
Exercises with solutions
Write down the original and target units first. For lengths, 1 m = 100 cm and 1 km = 1000 m; for mass, 1 kg = 1000 g. Square the length factor for areas. One hour has 60 minutes.
Exercise 1
Convert 2.4 m to centimetres.
Show solution and working
240 cm
1 m = 100 cm, so multiply 2.4 by 100 to get 240 cm.
Exercise 2
Convert 3500 g to kilograms.
Show solution and working
3.5 kg
1 kg = 1000 g, so divide 3500 by 1000 to get 3.5 kg.
Exercise 3
Convert 2 m² to square centimetres.
Show solution and working
20 000 cm²
A square with 1 m sides measures 100 cm × 100 cm. Thus 1 m² = 10 000 cm², and 2 m² = 20 000 cm².
Exercise 4
Convert 1 h 45 min to minutes.
Show solution and working
105 min
1 h = 60 min. Add the remaining 45 minutes: 60 + 45 = 105 min.
Common mistake
Not every conversion uses a factor of 10. From m² to cm² the factor is 10 000, not 100. Time units do not follow decimal steps.
