Klassenarbeit Grade 5: topics, tasks and preparation

The first maths Klassenarbeit often shapes the whole school year: it shows how well a child has settled into the orientation stage (Grades 5 and 6) at secondary school in Germany. This page explains which topics are typically tested in Grade 5, what a complete solution looks like and how to practise them.

What a Grade 5 Klassenarbeit typically tests

  • Arithmetic with whole numbers: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, often with large numbers and with the written methods. Part of the test is usually done without a calculator.
  • Smart calculation: rules such as factoring out, reordering and splitting numbers are meant to shorten mental arithmetic. Recognising the rule saves a lot of time in the test.
  • Units of measurement: lengths, weights and times are converted and used in word problems. An answer without a unit is often marked as incomplete.
  • Geometry: perimeter and area of rectangles and squares, quadrilaterals, the coordinate system and usually the volume and surface area of a cuboid. As a rule, a labelled sketch is part of the solution.
  • Word problems: first write down the given values, then calculate, then answer the question in one sentence. The solution path usually counts for more than the result.
  • Explaining and justifying: some tasks ask for one sentence explaining why a result is correct, for example using an estimate or a counterexample.
  • Note on format: duration, number of tasks and permitted aids depend on the federal state, school type and school. What the teacher announces in advance is binding.

Topics for the Grade 5 Klassenarbeit

Three example tasks with a full solution

The tasks are set in German, as they will be in the Klassenarbeit. The steps show the complete solution path.

Task 1

Berechne geschickt: 38 · 7 + 62 · 7.

  1. Both products contain the factor 7, so it can be factored out: 38 · 7 + 62 · 7 = (38 + 62) · 7.
  2. The bracket is easy: 38 + 62 = 100.
  3. So 100 · 7 = 700.

38 · 7 + 62 · 7 = 700

Common mistakes

  • Calculating both products separately (266 + 434). The result is right, but it costs time that is missing at the end.
  • Multiplying only one term by 7: 38 + 62 · 7 is a different task.
  • Doubling the factor when factoring out: (38 + 62) · 14 gives 1 400 instead of 700.

Task 2

Ein Quader ist 8 cm lang, 5 cm breit und 4 cm hoch. Berechne sein Volumen und seine Oberfläche.

  1. Volume: V = a · b · c = 8 cm · 5 cm · 4 cm = 160 cm³.
  2. Surface area: O = 2 · (a · b + a · c + b · c) = 2 · (40 cm² + 32 cm² + 20 cm²).
  3. The bracket gives 92 cm², so O = 2 · 92 cm² = 184 cm².

V = 160 cm³; O = 184 cm²

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up volume and surface area: 160 cm³ is a capacity, 184 cm² is an area.
  • Forgetting the factor 2 and calculating only three faces.
  • Swapping the units: cm³ belongs to the volume, cm² to the surface area.

Task 3

Ein Rechteck ist 12 cm lang und 7 cm breit. Ein Quadrat hat denselben Umfang. Wie lang ist eine Seite des Quadrats?

  1. Perimeter of the rectangle: U = 2 · (12 cm + 7 cm) = 2 · 19 cm = 38 cm.
  2. The square has the same perimeter: 4 · a = 38 cm.
  3. So a = 38 cm : 4 = 9,5 cm.

a = 9,5 cm

Common mistakes

  • Equating the areas instead of the perimeters: 84 cm² would give a = √84 ≈ 9,17 cm, which answers a different question.
  • Doubling only one side: 12 cm + 2 · 7 cm = 26 cm is not the perimeter.
  • Misplacing the decimal point when dividing by 4: 38 : 4 = 9,5, not 8,5.

How to prepare for the Klassenarbeit

  1. Take the teacher’s topic list seriously: tick off what is secure and practise what is still shaky first. Five tasks a day help more than one long session the evening before.
  2. Work with a timer: set it to half the exam time and solve one task from each topic. That shows you where you need too long.
  3. Write down the solution path: marks are usually given for the path, not only for the result. Write every intermediate step, even if you could do it in your head.
  4. Check the result: estimate first, then compare. Does 3 000 fit a task about 2 500? An estimate catches most careless mistakes.
  5. Units and a full sentence: write the unit in every word problem and answer the question in a complete sentence.
  6. Keep an error log: note every mistake with the correct solution and the reason. Before the test you only read that log.
