Practice Units of weight

Mass is measured in units such as grams and kilograms.

Converting to a common unit helps you compare amounts and calculate quantities in recipes or deliveries.

Exercises with solutions

Weights are measured in grams, kilograms and tonnes. Here 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 t = 1000 kg. To convert to a smaller unit you multiply, to a larger unit you divide.

Exercise 1

How many grams are 2.5 kg?

Show solution and working

2,500 g

1 kg = 1000 g, so 2.5 · 1000 g = 2,500 g.

Exercise 2

How many kilograms are 4,200 g?

Show solution and working

4.2 kg

4,200 ÷ 1000 = 4.2 kg.

Exercise 3

A box weighs 3 kg plus 300 g of packaging. How heavy is everything in grams?

Show solution and working

3,300 g

3 kg = 3,000 g. Then 3,000 g + 300 g = 3,300 g.

Exercise 4

How many kilograms are 2 t?

Show solution and working

2,000 kg

1 t = 1000 kg, so 2 · 1000 kg = 2,000 kg.

Common mistake

Confusing tonnes and kilograms: one tonne is a thousand kilograms, not a hundred. Write the unit at every conversion.
