Practice Large numbers
Large numbers use place value to group units, thousands and millions.
Understanding these groups helps you read population figures, distances and budgets.
Exercises with solutions
Read large numbers in groups of three from the right: thousands, millions, billions. When comparing, count the digits first: the number with more digits is larger. With equal digits, compare from left to right.
Exercise 1
Write 4,507,082 in words.
Show solution and working
four million five hundred and seven thousand and eighty-two
The groups are 4 million, 507 thousand and 82. Read together that gives four million five hundred and seven thousand and eighty-two.
Exercise 2
What is the number: three million two hundred thousand and forty?
Show solution and working
3,200,040
3 million = 3,000,000, 200 thousand = 200,000 and 40 = 40. Added together that is 3,200,040.
Exercise 3
Which number is larger: 989,999 or 1,000,001?
Show solution and working
1,000,001
The second number has seven digits, the first only six. More digits always means a larger number.
Exercise 4
How many whole thousands are in 2,340,500?
Show solution and working
2,340
Divide by 1000: 2,340,500 ÷ 1000 = 2,340.5. So there are 2,340 whole thousands.
Common mistake
Skipping the groups of three when reading aloud. And judging only by the number of digits works only while the digit counts differ; with equal digit counts the first differing digit from the left decides.
