Practice Telling time

Clock times locate moments, while durations measure the time between them.

Remember that an hour has sixty minutes when calculating across hours or midnight.

Exercises with solutions

One hour has 60 minutes, one minute 60 seconds. Time is therefore converted in sixties, not in hundreds. For a duration, convert both times into minutes and take the difference.

Exercise 1

How many minutes are 1 hour 45 minutes?

Show solution and working

105 minutes

1 hour = 60 minutes. 60 + 45 = 105.

Exercise 2

How many minutes are 2.5 hours?

Show solution and working

150 minutes

2 hours = 120 minutes and half an hour = 30 minutes. Together 150 minutes.

Exercise 3

A film starts at 19:40 and lasts 95 minutes. When does it end?

Show solution and working

21:15

19:40 + 20 minutes = 20:00. Another 75 minutes remain: 20:00 + 1 hour = 21:00, plus 15 minutes gives 21:15.

Exercise 4

How long is it from 8:25 to 11:10?

Show solution and working

2 hours 45 minutes

From 8:25 to 11:25 would be exactly 3 hours. Up to 11:10 that is 15 minutes less, so 2 hours 45 minutes.

Common mistake

Treating times like decimals. 1.5 hours are 90 minutes, not 150. Converting to minutes avoids this mistake.
