Practice Small multiplication table
Multiplication facts describe equal groups, such as four groups of three making twelve.
Knowing these facts helps with division, fractions and everyday calculations.
Exercises with solutions
The times tables cover all products from 1 · 1 up to 10 · 10. Multiplying and dividing belong together, so every fact helps you divide too: from 6 · 7 = 42 it follows that 42 ÷ 6 = 7.
Exercise 1
Calculate 6 · 7.
Show solution and working
42
6 · 7 = 42. By reversing it, 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
Exercise 2
Calculate 8 · 9.
Show solution and working
72
8 · 9 = 72. Aid: 8 · 10 = 80, subtract 8 to get 72.
Exercise 3
Calculate 56 ÷ 7.
Show solution and working
8
Look for the fact giving 56: 7 · 8 = 56, so 56 ÷ 7 = 8.
Exercise 4
Calculate 9 · 3.
Show solution and working
27
9 · 3 = 27. Aid: 10 · 3 = 30, subtract 3 to get 27.
Common mistake
Guessing when dividing instead of looking for the matching multiplication fact. Whoever knows 6 · 7 = 42 finds 42 ÷ 6 immediately. The nine times table comes easiest as the ten times table minus the number once.
