Grade 3 maths: topics, exercises and worksheets

In Grade 3, calculating up to 1000 takes centre stage: understanding place values, securing the times tables and taking the first steps into semi-written calculation. This selection helps you find suitable topics and build foundations step by step.

Reference: existing NRW curriculum mapping in Germany. Topics and sequence may vary by federal state, school type and classroom. This selection is not a complete curriculum.

Start with the times tables, which you will need everywhere. Try a worked example without the solution first and say the steps out loud. For numbers to 1000, the number line helps: find the neighbouring hundreds first, then look closely.

1. Read and order numbers to 1000 confidently

Split numbers into hundreds, tens and ones and order them on the number line. Watch the place values: 204 and 240 sound similar but are different.

2. Secure the times tables step by step

Practise each row with its aids: the nine times row via the ten times row, the four times row by doubling. Every multiplication fact also gives you two division facts.

3. Calculate semi-written instead of only counting

Split numbers into tens and ones and work in clear steps: first 48 + 20, then + 5. With helper facts such as doubling, even 4 · 25 becomes easy.

Two questions to get started

Write the number with 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 7 ones in digits.

Answer and worked solution

347

Each place value gets a digit: 3 hundreds = 300, 4 tens = 40, 7 ones = 7. Together: 300 + 40 + 7 = 347.

Which number is exactly halfway between 20 and 50?

Answer and worked solution

35

The gap is 30, half of it is 15. So the midpoint is 20 + 15 = 35.
