Practice Fractions: addition and subtraction

To add or subtract fractions, first give them a common denominator, then combine the numerators.

Keep the denominator and simplify the result.

Exercises with solutions

Find a common denominator, rewrite the fractions, then add or subtract the numerators. Keep the common denominator and simplify the result.

Exercise 1

Calculate 1/3 + 1/4.

Show solution and working

7/12

Use denominator 12: 1/3 = 4/12 and 1/4 = 3/12, so their sum is 7/12.

Exercise 2

Calculate 5/6 − 1/4.

Show solution and working

7/12

Use denominator 12: 5/6 = 10/12 and 1/4 = 3/12. Subtract to get 7/12.

Exercise 3

Calculate 3/5 + 1/10 and simplify.

Show solution and working

7/10

Rewrite 3/5 as 6/10. Add the numerators: 6/10 + 1/10 = 7/10.

Exercise 4

Calculate 1 1/2 − 2/3.

Show solution and working

5/6

Convert the mixed number: 1 1/2 = 3/2 = 9/6. Then 9/6 − 4/6 = 5/6.

Common mistake

Do not add numerators and denominators separately: 1/3 + 1/4 is not 2/7. The parts must have the same size before you combine them.
