Practice Integers

Integers include negative whole numbers, zero and positive whole numbers.

They describe temperatures, elevations and changes in balances.

Exercises with solutions

Integers include all positive and negative whole numbers together with zero. On the number line they are ordered by size, smaller to the left. Adding means moving right, subtracting means moving left. Two identical signs in a row become plus, two different signs become minus.

Exercise 1

Calculate −7 + 3.

Show solution and working

−4

Start at −7 and move three steps right: −6, −5, −4.

Exercise 2

Calculate −5 − 8.

Show solution and working

−13

Subtracting means moving left. From −5, eight steps left gives −13.

Exercise 3

Calculate 4 − (−6).

Show solution and working

10

A minus in front of a negative number becomes plus: 4 − (−6) = 4 + 6 = 10.

Exercise 4

Put in order of size: −12, 5, −3, 0, −8.

Show solution and working

−12, −8, −3, 0, 5

A negative number is smaller the larger its magnitude. −12 sits furthest left.

Common mistake

Thinking −12 is larger than −3 because 12 is larger than 3. For negative numbers the order reverses. And watch the sign when subtracting a negative number.
